You Are Your Biggest Roadblock.
3 Ways to Overcome Broken Promises.
If you’re reading this, I’m assuming you want to achieve greater things in life.
However, you’re not there yet because you lack self-respect. You’re breaking your own promises. You’re not showing up to do the work.
I’ll admit it.
I tend to make promises to myself & occasionally break them depending on the overall difficulty of the situation.
On the morning of writing this, I was supposed to go for a run around 5:30am.
I woke up at 5:30am & stood up from my bed, although I made a huge mistake.
I went back to sleep & woke up again at 8:53am.
I felt guilty.
I broke a promise to myself.
I had the gold in my hands & I let it drop.
Stop Breaking Promises
Make it a mission to show up & go commit to your promises.
If you respect yourself, you will go forth with that promise. You won’t make excuses.
If on the other hand, you break these promises…
You’ll make breaking them a habitual routine.
You’ll end up skipping the easiest tasks because you made your brain believe it’s okay to skip them.
"I’ll do it tomorrow".
Is by far the worst thing you can say to yourself simply because you’re making your brain believe that your future self will feel more motivated the next day.
So, what can you do about it?
Here are 3 simple ways you can commit to your promises.
Set a Deadline
Why should you set deadlines?
In school whenever we had deadlines, we (hopefully) made the effort to complete said assignment the day before that deadline. If we didn’t do so, we would face a dreadful encounter back home with our parents.
The trick here is that we can use the same sort of system with our own work to go forth with our tasks.
Tell your friends & family about this deadline.
Have them keep you accountable.
Create a Punishment
Aside from a deadline, punishing yourself for not going through with a certain task is another great way to motivate yourself.
If you skip out on a workout, punish yourself with a 5-mile run.
If you skip a reading session, have someone take your phone away for 24 hours.
Do you get the gist here?
Essentially, you’re giving yourself a dreadful punishment for not completing a promised task.
You’ll thank yourself & also hate yourself for doing so, but that’s how you know you’re doing it right.
Set Reminders
If you’re not aware of your promises, how will you complete them?
I’m personally an addict to setting reminders.
Here are some reminders I set for myself every day:
Morning Runs
Reading + Notetaking Sessions
Mental Iterations
Practicing Duolingo
Writing a Final Draft Iteration
I intentionally set daily reminders for myself so I never have the chance of “forgetting to do a task”.
Revision
With these 3 steps, I myself end up breaking less promises to myself & hopefully you can break less promises yourself as well with these 3 actionable tips I gave & set in stone.
If you like skipping to the end of things, here’s what we covered:
Set a Deadline
Create a Punishment
Set Reminders
