Your Future Relies on this One Thing.
Don't f*ck up your future.
Our futures are never expected to turn out as we desire.
We have an idea of what it is we want it to look like, yet sometimes unfortunate events happen which causes our vision to derail another way. We can’t control what happens to us, yet we can control how we react.
With that being said, our habits are what makes us unique & what eventually determines our future.
If you tried to define yourself it’s almost as if you’re trying to define what color a chameleon is.
There’s never a set answer.
This is why it isn’t ideal to define yourself without starting with a habit assessment.
Our daily habits are what either support or destroy our future selves.
When you were a kid, you had great dreams & desires, yet as you grow older you start to believe less in those dreams or you simply pivot to a different aspiration.
Either way, you want to make your younger self proud as well as your future-self.
Every action you take today either supports the journey you’re heading towards or it hinders the outcomes of your journey.
Two Motivated Guys
Two guys for the sake of this example go by the name of, “Patrick” & “Steve” who are both of the age 18 and are both in college.
They both want to be successful financially, physically & socially.
Would you say this defines them as a person?
I think not, because of the fact that we haven’t taken their habits into consideration.
Throughout the day, Patrick likes to spend his free time playing golf, reading books, working out, learning new things, trying new things, going to new places & spending valuable time with close ones.
Patrick is also working on his own business in which he spends a lot of his time thinking of new ways to come about his strategies within this endeavor as well as taking action upon those thoughts.
Patrick loves to be productive & also has clarity of the mind.
Steve on the other hand knows he wants more in his life yet he can’t bring himself to do the work that will get him to where he wants to be.
Instead of doing things similarly to Patrick, he spends his time indulging in videos, mentally masturbating & essentially keeping himself stuck in beginner’s hell.
His mind “tires” out from all the information he takes in, so he decides to unwind by playing video games & watching Netflix.
Eventually, over time this consistent habit keeps him in the same place he started, while Patrick is constantly progressing over these months.
Think about it, they both started at the same place, so they should be neck & neck…
Right?
Not if their habits aren’t aligned with their long-term aspirations.
Reflect
So what can you get out of this story?
Reflect on what you just read & ask yourself if you are committing your time to something unproductive & unrelative to your goals.
Now I will say, being strict about yourself is important yet letting go once in a blue moon has no wrongs to it.
As long as you know you are constantly working on yourself & improving your train of thought, then you should be fine over the long term.
If it’s ever too hard, don’t give up, just focus more on priorities.
Actionable Advice
Take out a pen & notepad.
Create a double columned table with the following headers:
Positive | Negative |
Under these columns, I want you to write out all your daily habits accordingly.
Don’t hold back & don’t hesitate.
If you find yourself watching YouTube a lot, write it down.
If you find yourself reading a lot, write it down.
In order for you to make a change in your life you need to be aware of what is holding you back from your potential.
This isn’t a one-and-done thing.
You’ll find yourself constantly adding to this list with time & that’s what matters.
You improve with time, not desperation.
