Am I Spending my Free Time Properly?
3 Subtle Ways I Spend my Free Time Productively.
Peak productivity is everyone’s dream.
Although, we can’t always be productive. Sometimes we need time to relax & unwind. However, there is one key factor that separates the successful from the ultra-successful.
That key factor is the ability to spend their free time productively.
Instead of scrolling on social media or playing a quick game with their buddies.
They choose to do something more productive.
This is a habit I have already cemented into my everyday life making it much easier for me to spend my time productively.
I barely waste any time consuming cheap dopamine that serves me no purpose.
You can & should do the same as well.
Your mind will majorly reap the benefits.
Why Most Can’t Spend their Time Productively
Poisoned Conditioning of the Mind
Habitual Routines
No Effort
These are the 3 productivity killers.
When you possess a poisoned conditioning of the mind, your mind is programmed to believe that the only way to spend your time is through your current consumption of cheap dopamine.
When you possess a habitual routine, your mind is again programmed to believe that it’s time for blatant, cheap dopamine consumption.
You’ve made it a part of your everyday life.
If you put no effort into removing these productivity killers from your life, you’ll stay the same.
You will never be able to spend your free time productively.
Reading an Informative Article/Blog Post
A great alternative to physical books.
When reading articles or blog posts, I’m reaping similar benefits as if I was reading a physical book.
I’m still consuming valuable information.
The only difference being that I’m consuming this information digitally.
I tend to not only read articles written by other writers.
I tend to read my own written letters as well.
This helps me understand my written topic on a deeper level.
It helps me point out any minor flaws I may have within my content as well.
Plus, it’s a great way to pass time.
Try it, you might get hooked.
Playing Chess
Chess.
It’s a challenge.
The phrase; “Chess not Checkers" exists for a good reason.
That reason being that you need to think in a unique, strategic way in order to faulter your opponent.
When I first started playing chess a year ago, everything was a challenge.
Knowing where each piece can move was a challenge, especially that infamous knight.
Although over the course of 2-3 weeks, I quickly got the hang of it.
I had friends who were good at chess which helped me progress further.
I watched short videos on the different moves & tactics you can use in certain situations.
In essence, I learned the game efficiently in only the span of a month.
When you have the right resources around, you can learn anything.
Once I learned how to play, I started playing chess in my free time.
In summer school (A story for another time), I played chess with one of those same friends that helped me progress.
Chess helps you work your mind without having to read a book or working on a project.
It’s a great way to pass time while still being fun & productive.
Physical Movement
Physical movement is my whole life’s work.
I’ve been an athlete since the 4th grade & up until my senior year, my whole identity revolved around sports & athletics.
I aspired to play basketball professionally.
I worked hard every day since the 6th grade to get better.
I always played with the older guys.
It forced me to get better simply because of the major experience gap.
I’ve always been told I had great potential & I knew it.
I was starting to live up to that potential up until I unfortunately came across a groin injury in end of my junior year. (A story for another time)
Although this didn’t stop me.
The takeaway I want to give here is that I like to spend time moving.
Whether it’s going for a run, going for a walk, practicing advanced calisthenic skills, or playing a sport, I need to get myself moving.
I’ve never been a guy who would sit & relax by a beach all day.
My personality could never handle that lifestyle.
I’d hate my life if that were the case.
Revision
In essence, your ability to spend your free time productively is what will differentiate you from your competition.
Steal my productive habits, you won’t regret it.
