This Week’s Topic
You will never be perceived as powerful, confident & intelligent — simply for the fact that you can’t embrace silence.
Being able to embrace silence is a disguised superpower. You’ll be perceived as more intelligent, confident & powerful. You become a person of influence.
Filling in silence with “um” & “uh” makes you seem like a newbie.
You seem as if you don’t know what you’re talking about & you’re reading off of a monologue.
People want to listen to people who are confident in what they are saying. (Not the other way around)
Don’t rely on people to give you the confidence you should have already.
By improving your ability to embrace silence — people will perceive you as confident, powerful & intelligent.
You’ll come across unique opportunities & be exposed to people who have unique ways of living life.
Just as I’ve personally been able to meet higher-quality people, be a part of special private entrepreneurship communities & be perceived as confident & intelligent — you can also use this superpower as a way to land higher-paying jobs & be open to more opportunities.
(Keep in mind — I’m a quiet guy who gets told I’m quiet all the time — yet people still perceive me as intelligent, powerful & confident)
When put into practice — you’ll form a whole new identity to the point where the old you won’t be recognizable.
My Science Professor
The typical excuse as to why people don’t consider embracing silence — they believe they have to constantly be speaking to hold people’s attention.
Sure, it makes sense, although it isn’t true.
In order to hold people’s attention — you must be able to keep them hooked.
How do you keep them hooked?
You keep them waiting for the next sentence.
I’ve seen friends & even professors make this mistake & it majorly hinders their ability to teach & persuade.
My science professor (Great professor) is a prime example of this cognitive mistake.
She’s very intelligent & aware of geography, space & the human brain — yet she struggles to avoid using filler words when she speaks.
She has too much to talk about, I get it.
Although it’s important to focus on one sentence at a time.
Don’t try to spill everything all at once.
This is how you end up losing the attention of a quality audience or peer.
Actionable Advice
You may be wondering - “Drew, I understand your points, yet how can I apply this to my own life? How can I keep myself accountable?”
I’m glad you asked.
There are 3 ways you can keep yourself accountable for using filler words.
1. Tell the people around you to keep you accountable.
2. Keep an index card on the back of your phone.
3. Make the accountability your wallpaper.
If you tell the people around you to keep you accountable — you get live, real-world feedback.
If you keep an index card on the back of your phone — you have a constant reminder at all times.
If you have a wallpaper saying — “Avoid using filler words” — you have a constant reminder there for you every time you pick up your phone.
Revision
In essence — being able to embrace silence is the key to your lack of authority.
You’ll be able to unlock opportunities you weren’t open to before as well as be able to meet higher-quality people. (Maybe even significant others)
People like to be led by authoritative power & this is your cheat sheet to getting one step closer.
